Title: Cassell's Book of Poultry - 19th C Lithograph

Reference: 01763

Description: 'WHEATEN GAME HEN' - From a Splendid Bird Lent by Mr C Chaloner' Original antique lithographs, c. late 1800's. The Illustrated Book of Poultry by Lewis Wright, was a series of poultry lithographs, popularly known as Cassell's Book of Poultry. Cassell's Book of Poultry is perhaps the most famous and desirable 19th-century illustrated book on the subject, with fine chromolithographs after illustrations by J. W. Ludlow and text by Lewis Wright Each bird is sensitively portrayed in a natural farm or henhouse setting, named by its own personality and temperament that seems to correspond to its appearance. Some prints show a single bird, others show two, either the more showy males, or a pair of male and female, sometimes praising the owner, by implication, and listing, where appropriate, the cup or ribbon won. The book was reprinted several times between 1880 and 1911. The Illustrated Book of Poultry was part of the natural history series published by Cassell and Company in England in the latter half of the 1800s. As decorative as they are historically accurate, these plates make a fine addition to a country kitchen. Size (in): 8.5 x 11
